Who said Unicorns don't exist? This exquisite Victorian unicorn intaglio signet is carved on an oval agate panel and is bezel set in 14K Yellow Gold with a split shoulder shank.
The unicorn is shown in profile, its beard and mane waving wildly in the wind symbolizing its untamable nature. The hand carved unicorn contrasts beautifully against the milky white shroud surrounding it.
During the Renaissance, the unicorn became a secular symbol of chastity and loyalty and in the Victorian era, the famous ‘Lady and the Unicorn’ tapestries made around 1500, and widely considered to be amongst the greatest pieces of medieval art, were rediscovered, and romanticised by Victorian artists.
Signet rings can be dated back as far as 3500 BC when the people of Mesopotamia used cylindrical seals as marks of authenticity. Ancient Egyptians used seals attached to a ring and Pharaohs and other important people of the day would wear them to show their position. The word signet originated from the Latin word “signum” meaning “sign” and were worn by royalty and notable people as a personal signature or symbol of family heritage.
