A wonderful 18K Yellow Gold Lovers Knot Ring set with three old cut diamonds. The ring face features a large knot with alternating plain and engraved cords that intertwine and loop together to create one single knot. Three lozenge shaped plaques sit atop the knot, each set with an old cut diamond in a starburst design.
Lovers Knot rings were traditionally exchanged as a gift during courtship and began in the early 19th century by sailors who would often gift their lovers jewellery made of rope, cord and other non-precious metals as they would be away at sea for a period of time. In the Victorian era, the Lovers Knot ring evolved to be created in gold.
The ring has full British Hallmarks and dates to 1916.
