An exquisite enamel pansy ring crafted from 18K rose gold from circa Napoleon II era.
The ring face features a blank oval shaped plaque and a shank adorned with intricate enamel work in black and white of two pansies that continue all the way down the band. The pansy flower, translates as 'pensée' in French, which is a rebus for the word 'pensez' (to think or ponder) and jewellery with pansy flowers would convey the sentiment 'pensez à moi' or 'think of me'.
The bottom of the band on the outer part of the shank has french eagle and ram hallmarks. The eagle hallmark indicates gold purity of 18K gold while the rare ram hallmark was used for small gold items from 1819-1838.
This ring style could have been traditionally, a glove ring which was a ring that was worn over a glove. A truly remarkable piece to add to your jewellery collection.
This style jewellery and the black and white enamel work is likely from the French regions of Anjou and the Loire Valley.
